Job Description For Gatehouse Attendant Vacancies In University of North Carolina System 2024

Greetings nature enthusiasts! The North Carolina Arboretum is seeking a (Temporary) Part-time gate attendant to help us guide and welcome guests to our 434-acre paradise.

The role would work 12-16 hours per week consistently and be asked to cover shifts in times of absence. The regular shift would be Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and every other Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. The ability to stand for long periods of time is required. Within the State of North Carolina, a temporary employee can work 11 out of 12 month each year.

While we are fortunate not to need extra coverage very often, we would ask that this role provide coverage for circumstances that arise such as sickness, appointment, and vacation coverage. Those hours can run a bit longer from 7:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. each day.

Pay is $16 per hour.

The fundamental responsibilities of this position involve providing information and assistance to visitors, collecting fees, and providing general security services for visitors, volunteers, and employees of The North Carolina Arboretum. The main goals of this position are to provide exceptional customer service in a safe environment, to control and monitor access to State property, and to collect parking fees.

Other duties of this position may include security and safety inspections, foot patrols, directing traffic, and emergency medical response. This position will serve as an initial point of contact for visitors and will help to provide positive guest relations. This position will be required to complete logs and reports and will be responsible for the proper handling and documentation of all monies received.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills
High school diploma or equivalent. This position requires weekend availability

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills
Previous guest service experience is preferred.

Competencies
Knowledge-Technical: Understanding of basic protective and security practices. General working knowledge of the policies, rules, and regulations applicable to the property being guarded, sufficient to recognize and report situations that may violate the policies, rules, and regulations. Basic knowledge of the operations of the organization and familiarity with the infrastructure of the assigned area (gatehouse). Ability to operate basic equipment such as radios, phones, flashlights, fire extinguishers, credit card processing machines, etc.. Ability to use the basic functionality of security/surveillance systems for monitoring. Ability to adapt to changes in security procedures and systems adopted by the department. • Communication: Ability to listen and understand messages and instructions from others. Ability to gather information as needed. Ability to transmit radio messages using established protocols and procedures. Ability to provide routine responses to general requests for information. Ability to maintain logs and records. Ability to acquire a basic understanding of working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, emergency response personnel, and the general public. • Decision Making: Ability to recognize, identify, and report unusual, suspect, or hazardous activities or conditions. Ability to refer non-standard questions and problems to higher levels.
